Piles

Piles—also called haemorrhoids—are enlarged, inflamed blood vessels within the anal canal that swell as a result of excessive pressure. Haemorrhoids are common, and can affect one in three people at some point in their life, especially women during pregnancy.

Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer—or cancer originating in the colon or rectum—is Singapore’s top cancer; it is also the second most common cancer diagnosed in females, with post-menopausal women at a higher risk of colon cancer.

While symptoms associated with colorectal cancer can include abdominal pain, blood in stools, a change in bowel habits, and a sensation that the bowels have not been completely emptied—these symptoms often do not appear till the cancer has advanced to later stages.

For women, it is also possible to mistake the abdominal pain caused by colon cancer for menstrual cramps, or relating the state of feeling fatigued and anaemic due to usual menstrual cycles.

It takes a trained specialist to distinguish between colorectal and gynaecological symptoms; women who experience abrupt or prolonged abdominal symptoms not usually associated with menstrual periods are advised to seek medical advice promptly.

Hernia

A hernia is a protrusion in the abdominal or groin area, which occurs when a part of an organ pushes through a weakness in the muscular wall of the abdomen, resulting in a bulge. Once a hernia forms, it will not resolve by itself and requires treatment via open or laparoscopic surgery.

The hernia may present with:

  • Sharp or arching pain at the hernia site
  • Burning sensation in the upper thigh
  • Pain in the groin when coughing, laughing, or lifting something
  • Constant pressure in the groin

While hernias are common in both males and females, they do not present with the same degree of outward bulging in the female anatomy, making them frequently underdiagnosed in females. Femoral hernias, which occur in the upper thigh near the groin, also also more common in women than men. For prompt and accurate diagnosis of unexplained pelvic pain, consult an experienced hernia surgeon.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to a group of disorders characterised by the chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, withCrohn's disease and ulcerative colitis being the two main types.

A serious and debilitating condition, IBD affects women differently than men, with worsening symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhoea, anaemia and fatigue during menstrual cycles. Female IBD patients may also be at a higher risk of developing complications during pregnancy, and are prone to osteoporosis even before menopause.

Depending on the IBD type and severity, treatment may involve anti-inflammatory medications, immunomodulators, biologics and even surgery. With early treatment, the chances of significantly improving the quality of life are promising, whilst achieving remission and reducing complications.
