What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Known as keyhole surgery, the laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive approach that allows the surgeon to use tiny incisions to access the inside of the abdomen and pelvis to perform diagnostic or therapeutic surgery on damaged or diseased organs.

How Is Laparoscopic Surgery Carried Out?

  • 1.The surgeon makes one or more small incisions at the operative site.
  • 2.A small tube pumped with carbon dioxide gas is inserted to inflate the abdominal space for better access and viewing.
  • 3.A laparoscopic lens affixed to a high-definition camera is then placed for the surgeon to view the internal organs via real-time images projected on a monitor.
  • 4.Long, thin specialised surgical tools may also be utilised to repair or remove abnormal tissues.
  • 5.When the procedure is complete, the surgeon will release the carbon dioxide from the abdominal area, close the incisions using stitches and apply dressing.
